The Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has expressed deep shock and strongly condemned the killing of two of its volunteers by unidentified armed men on June 16, 2026, in Kakumba village, Musiru center, Walungu Territory, South Kivu Province.
In a press release issued on June 23, 2026, the humanitarian organization stated that the victims, Byamungu Mugisho Kabuha and Mugisho Mparanya Romain, were participating in a mission aimed at improving access to safe drinking water for vulnerable communities when they were attacked and killed by armed assailants.
Quoted in the statement, the National President of the DRC Red Cross, Grégoire Mateso Mbuta Way, emphasized that the two volunteers were wearing the Red Cross emblem, a universally recognized symbol of neutrality, impartiality, and humanitarian assistance.
According to him, the tragedy highlights the serious risks faced daily by humanitarian workers operating in eastern DRC. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The DRC Red Cross noted that the security situation remains highly volatile in Walungu Territory and across much of South Kivu Province. Recurring armed violence has triggered large-scale population displacement, leaving thousands of people dependent on humanitarian assistance.
The organization warned that attacks against aid workers further worsen an already critical humanitarian situation by limiting access to communities in need. It stressed that humanitarian personnel play a vital role in assisting conflict-affected populations and must be protected at all times.
The DRC Red Cross also reiterated that threats, intimidation, and acts of violence against humanitarian workers are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian principles and called on all parties to respect and protect humanitarian missions.
Paying tribute to the two deceased volunteers, the organization praised their dedication, courage, and commitment to serving vulnerable communities, stating that their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of humanitarian workers.
Despite persistent security challenges, the DRC Red Cross reaffirmed its determination to continue delivering humanitarian assistance to affected populations in accordance with its fundamental principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and voluntary service.
